Sure, here it goes:
—
So, yeah, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Remember it? Came out ages ago, back in 2006. And now they’ve gone and remastered the thing. I mean, heck, I probably wore out the disc back then. Anyway, it’s available for PC and consoles now. And surprise, surprise, folks are already trying to bolt a VR rig onto it. As you do.
Bethesda made this big deal about shifting Oblivion to the Unreal Engine 5. Wonder what’s wrong with the old Gamebryo engine. I guess time and tide, right? Anyway, the graphics got a facelift — textures, characters, animations, lighting — the whole shebang. Makes you wonder if they’ll do this for Morrowind next. And modders? Well, they’re diving in like it’s happy hour. There’s this ‘Praydog’s UEVR plugin.’ No clue what all that jazz means, but it’s apparently something to do with VR. Mods, huh? The Wild West of gaming.
Now, UEVR. It’s kinda snazzy with features like 6DOF head movement. Sounds like something outta sci-fi. And OpenXR runtimes… Whatever happened to good ol’ controller support? But wait—LunchAndVR (sorta YouTube VR whiz?) is fiddling with profiles or something. I mean, hats off to them, I’d just break the whole thing.
Should probably check out this gameplay thingy they have. I watched it, and… well, seems like early days. They’re still wrestling with the controls. Guess VR isn’t all smooth sailing. Funny seeing them navigate dungeons, flailing at rats. It’s honestly hilarious and kinda heartwarming at the same time. Outdoor performance—don’t even get me started. Seems like it struggles a bit out there.
Here’s the kicker, though: the rig they’re using for this. It’s like packing a Ferrari engine into a kid’s toy car. RTX 4090, Intel Core i9-13900, 64GB RAM. Overkill? Quite possibly, but who am I to judge? And a Quest 3 with some Virtual Desktop wizardry. Crazy setup, but maybe that’s what makes the magic happen.
Not everything is sorted yet, but VR adventurers can have a go now. Grab Praydog’s mod and some test profiles making the rounds. LunchAndVR’s got a couple of those: one for 6DOF from ‘Keyser’ and a 3DOF one by ‘Pande4360’. Yeah, you gotta love these internet aliases. Anyway, both are up for grabs.
Just a note before I wander off: you’ll need a legit copy of Oblivion Remastered, whether you snatch it off Steam or Game Pass. But hey, who didn’t see that one coming?
And there you have it. Oblivion in VR. Probably something I didn’t know I wanted but turns out, maybe I do. Or do I? Meh, might give it a shot, or might just rewatch the old trailers for nostalgia. Who knows.
