Whoa, okay. So nDreams, they’re like this big name in VR, right? Just announced a new game. It’s called Reach, and you’ve got their brand new team, nDreams Elevation, leading the charge. (I kinda like that name, Elevation. Feels lifted, you know?)
So last week, they threw some gameplay previews at us. Talks a lot about parkour and combat stuff. It’s like, you’ve gotta move differently because, duh, it’s VR. And they seem to be pretty jazzed about the idea of redefining how we move in these games. Like, jump around—it’s all gesture-based to trick your brain. So you’re really jumping but not, if you get what I mean.
Design dude Matt Duff mentioned three pillars or whatever—action, adventure, and presence. Soldiering on from the basic virtual reality tropes, the whole thing is built around making you feel like you’re there. Yeah, that “presence” thing. They push this idea of grabbing your way through the game, pulling yourself like a monkey or something.
Side note: The images they’ve shared are rad. Makes you wish you could reach (pun not intended but whatever) right in and scale stuff.
And combat? Oh man, you can either go all Rambo or be the sneaky ninja. There’s this bow with cool arrows that pop, freeze, or zap stuff. I’d probably end up shooting everything just to see what happens. I’m chaotic like that, what can I say?
But anyway—wait. Backtracking a bit—they also talk about this Full-body Awareness system. None of that floaty hands weirdness anymore, your whole body’s in there acting real. (Ever notice how floaty hands just make VR feel so meta? No? Just me?)
Ultimately, if you’re hyped, you can wishlist Reach on those platforms—Quest 3, PSVR 2, and good ol’ Steam. Anyway, that’s the download on Reach. Jump, swing, shoot. Maybe fall. Happy virtual reality, folks.
