On April 17, 2025, Blizzard released a gameplay trailer for Overwatch 2’s eagerly awaited Season 16. Among the exciting announcements were the introduction of the new Stadium Mode, the debut of the Damage Hero Freja, and the thrilling news of a crossover with the classic anime series Gundam Wing.
Just eleven days later, Blizzard dropped another trailer that offered fans a tantalizing glimpse of the upcoming Gundam Wing collaboration, set to launch on April 29, 2025.
This collaboration is a limited-time event that runs from April 29 to May 13, 2025. During these dates, players can snag unique cosmetic skins for several Overwatch Heroes, each inspired by the iconic Gundam mechs from the anime series.
Here’s what’s on offer: Mercy embodies the Wing Gundam Zero, Ramattra transforms into Epyon, Soldier: 76 appears as Tallgeese, and Reaper dons the garb of Deathscythe. But that’s not all—players can also grab Gundam Wing-themed items, like the Shinigami title and Zero System spray, by completing special challenges during the event.
For those who might not know, Gundam Wing is the sixth major installment in the long-running Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, which kicked off in 1979. The anime tells the story of five Gundam pilots who battle to free Earth from the oppressive United Earth Sphere Alliance, fighting on behalf of the Space Colonies.
It’s a series rich with political intrigue, coming-of-age themes, and explosive mecha battles. Seeing Gundam link up with Overwatch is a surprise indeed, especially as Bandai Namco once tried to launch its own Overwatch-style game with 2022’s Gundam Evolution. However, that attempt was short-lived, as servers shut down in late 2023. This crossover allows fragments of Gundam Evolution to live on within the Overwatch universe.
Blizzard has been on a crossover spree lately. Alongside the Gundam collaboration, there’s also a link-up between Diablo 4 and Berserk. Overwatch 2 has already dabbled in crossovers with Cowboy Bebop, One Punch Man, and Transformers, among others.
These partnerships have fans speculating wildly. Could we eventually see World of Warcraft team up with another huge franchise, like Final Fantasy 14? While it might sound far-fetched, Blizzard’s recent surprises suggest anything is possible. Only time will tell what Blizzard has in store next.
Meanwhile, Overwatch 2’s new Stadium Mode is out now on Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC, offering players more reasons to dive back into the action.
