PSVR 2’s ‘Ancient Dungeon’ Finally Introduces Long-Awaited Multiplayer Co-op Mode

Ancient Dungeon VR, the popular rogue-lite dungeon crawler, has recently received a much-anticipated update for the PSVR 2, ushering in multiplayer co-op play into the mix.

Originally making its debut in 2021 on both Steam Early Access and Quest’s now-closed App Lab, Ancient Dungeon was crafted as a solo adventure, challenging players to navigate over 20 hours of labyrinthine corridors filled with physics-driven combat against pixelated wizards, skeletons, and other foes reminiscent of classic Dungeons & Dragons.

Versions for Quest and SteamVR welcomed four-player co-op back in mid-2024, but sadly, this feature was missing from the PSVR 2 rollout when the game arrived on that platform in December 2023.

That oversight has now been addressed, as creator Eric Thullen has unveiled the eagerly awaited multiplayer update for PSVR 2. This enhancement allows up to four players to collaboratively brave the game’s procedurally-generated dungeons, evading traps and battling enemies together.

Discussing the game’s evolution in a Reddit Q&A, Thullen mentioned that cross-play across different platforms isn’t available just yet. However, he reassured fans that support for cross-play between the Quest and PC VR versions is on the horizon, promising it “will be coming at a later date.”

Ancient Dungeon stands out as a significant indie success in the VR space, thanks initially to a hit Kickstarter campaign in 2020. It gained substantial early traction with a warmly received beta that attracted over 1,000 reviews and an impressive [4.8/5] rating.

Now, nearly half a decade later, the team is still improving the experience through regular updates. These enhancements include new weapons and cosmetics, insight upgrades, additional dungeon floors, and relics, all in preparation for the major 1.0 launch, which, according to the latest Steam update, is still “a ways to go.”
