Soul Paint offers a unique VR journey blending 3D artistry with deep self-reflection.
This imaginative project, which launched at SXSW 2024, was envisioned by Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit, with the entrancing voice of Rosario Dawson guiding the way. In Soul Paint, you step into an ethereal world, where you’re not just a spectator but an active participant, drawing across a three-dimensional space right onto your virtual self.
Using a mix of body-mapping and virtual reality, the creators aim to help you explore and understand your emotions. They believe this experience can nurture empathy and foster social bonds by connecting with the experiences of others. At the journey’s end, you’re encouraged to share these feelings, offering an opportunity to connect on a deeper level.
I had the chance to experience Soul Paint firsthand during the NewImages Festival 2025 through the XR Market, and it starts with an intriguing question: “Where are you feeling?” Though initially uncertain, it didn’t take long to sense the spiritual undertones. In a serene, almost celestial atmosphere, you’re encouraged to unveil your emotions through physical expression.
What unfolded was a calming, introspective encounter. While my artistic skills might not be noteworthy, the act of drawing was exactly what I needed. You can sketch over your virtual form and even leave a voice message at the end, choosing to let others discover your inner thoughts. It’s a heartfelt way of expressing emotions when words fall short.
Soul Paint reflects yourself back through VR, offering a strong sense of presence and control, even if the experience itself is fleeting and straightforward. It’s a refreshing medium for self-expression and connecting with others. While it might not delve deeply, its thoughtful and reflective nature makes up for it. I hope we continue to see more innovations like this.
There’s no word yet on whether Soul Paint will be available for home use, but we’ll keep you updated with any new developments.
