Xbox is buzzing with anticipation as it hints at a lineup of yet-to-be-announced first-party games. On a recent episode of Xbox’s official podcast, Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, opened up about some exciting titles on the horizon. He talked about games like “South of Midnight” and “Doom: The Dark Ages,” while also mentioning a delay for Playground Games’ reboot of “Fable,” now aiming for a 2026 launch.
It’s fair to say that Xbox’s first-party studios are on a roll. Following the critically acclaimed “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” at the close of 2024, 2025 is shaping up to be even more spectacular for Xbox lovers. “Avowed” from Obsidian has just received a warm welcome from fans, and soon to follow is Compulsion Games’ “South of Midnight,” set for an April release, then “Doom: The Dark Ages” in May. Additionally, a sequel to “The Outer Worlds” by Obsidian is expected later this year. Beyond 2025, anticipation builds for games like the “Perfect Dark” reboot, the BioShock-inspired “Clockwork Revolution,” “Gears of War: E-Day,” and of course, “Fable.”
In the podcast, Duncan sought to ease the disappointment over the Fable delay by promising that there’s still plenty to look forward to. Without revealing too much, he hinted at several games still under wraps, stating, “We’ve got a bunch of stuff we haven’t announced, so obviously I spend a bunch of time with that…but yeah, we have lots going on.”
There could be a flurry of new announcements from Xbox’s first-party studios soon. Double Fine, for instance, hasn’t released a new game since “Psychonauts 2” over three years ago, which has left fans eager for more from Tim Schafer’s team. Ninja Theory might be ready to unveil its next big project any day, and Obsidian is reputed for having small teams dedicated to intriguing projects like “Grounded” or “Pentiment.” The revamped Halo Studios might even reveal a new Unreal Engine 5 experience, while Playground’s Forza team might have something exciting to showcase. And let’s not forget the potential reveals from the Bethesda and Activision Blizzard teams.
While nothing is set in stone yet, gamers should keep their eyes peeled for an Xbox showcase announcement likely coming in the next few months. That’s where we can expect the curtains to rise on new first-party game titles, promising to deliver excitement on par with or beyond last year’s showcase.
