It’s easy to suggest everyone should build their own gaming PC, but for many, it’s more reassuring to let the experts handle it.

Not all pre-built gaming rigs are on the same level, but the HP OMEN series has consistently reinforced its credibility among gamers. The new HP OMEN 35L arrives as a powerful, high-end option that fits comfortably within a mid-sized case. Boasting significant power, blossoming AI features, and an elegant yet upgradeable design, this striking black-and-white desktop stakes its claim in the gaming world.

I’ve been putting the HP OMEN 35L through its paces, powered by Intel’s latest Core Ultra (Series 2) platform. After using it for several weeks, I could easily envision it as my own. Sure, there were minor annoyances here and there, and you can’t have it all when downsizing, but the OMEN 35L is a competent and trustworthy piece of hardware that can tackle even the most demanding PC games. Moreover, it won’t cost you a fortune to get started.

Regarding my credentials, I’ve logged countless hours gaming and working at my desk. My desktop needs to keep up with my demands, whether it’s a custom build or a pre-built model. I’m constantly on the lookout for machines that stand out in terms of performance, thermal handling, design, and upgradability.

Let’s dive into the details of the HP OMEN 35L. Its various configurations start at $1,300, with the top model costing $2,899.99—further, customization options allow for even more extensive setups. This desktop offers remarkable value, particularly if you’re seeking an Intel-powered machine.

The reviewed configuration, priced at $2,899.99, includes: an Intel Z890 motherboard, Intel Core Ultra 7 265K CPU, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super GPU, Intel AI Boost NPU, 32GB DDR5 RAM, 2TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, and an 850W power supply.

While this review focuses on the Intel Core Ultra model, the HP OMEN 35L can also be configured with AMD and NVIDIA hardware. Starting prices for the AMD versions begin at $1,299.99, and for the Intel-NVIDIA setup, it begins at $1,399.99. The variant with both AMD CPUs and NVIDIA GPUs begins at $1,369.99.

This vast array of configurations makes the OMEN 35L adaptable to personal preferences, making it an attractively priced pre-built gaming PC, particularly with Intel’s high-performance motherboards that offer excellent future upgrade potential.

Out of the box, the HP OMEN 35L includes the tower itself and a detachable power cable, though it doesn’t come with a keyboard or mouse by default. You’re covered by HP’s 1-year limited warranty.

Moving onto its design and build quality, the HP OMEN 35L cleverly conceals its 35-liter capacity. Its design is both sleek and functional, offering toolless access on both sides and abundant ports on top and rear.

I’ve seen my fair share of elaborate PC cases, and the OMEN 35L stands out as a favorite among mainstream pre-built options. Although it offers a choice of all-black and a two-tone “panda” design, my review unit’s white-and-black look was particularly appealing.

The OMEN 35L is elegantly designed, bringing together aesthetically pleasing branding and thoughtful workmanship. The case features a toolless tempered glass panel that can be easily removed to access the internals. The other metal side panel is also removable, unveiling neatly hidden and color-matched cables for a cleaner look. Additionally, the RGB lighting on the fans, RAM, and GPU can be tailored to your liking through the OMEN Gaming Hub, not to mention the customizable CPU liquid cooler.

This version sits on a solid metal chassis, except the tempered glass side, ensuring durability and precision in its build. Incorporating recycled materials, HP maintains eco-friendly practices with its paint being water-based.

The OMEN 35L doesn’t fall short on ports either but remains unique despite its lack of integrated graphics display outputs on the motherboard. Intel’s Core Ultra configurations now offer a Thunderbolt 4 port with DisplayPort 2.1—a rarely seen feature on desktops.

As for performance and thermals, the OMEN 35L is among the first to feature Intel Core Ultra, showing strong all-around performance. While not groundbreaking for gaming, its thermal management holds its own, and the inclusion of an NPU opens up new potential avenues.

Though not setting any records, the new Intel platform excels in productivity tasks and future-proofs this system for impending AI advances. Even so, the uplift in gaming performance isn’t particularly noticeable over last-gen Intel and AMD components, particularly for those seeking optimal gaming frame rates.

In real-world gaming, the OMEN 35L delivers smooth experiences even at maximum settings across various titles, though a BIOS glitch prevented me from overclocking to explore its full prowess.

On the thermal front, the OMEN 35L performs exceptionally well. A cooling system featuring ample fans and a 240mm liquid cooler ensures it never overheats, maintaining near-silent operation.

When it comes to upgradeability, the use of standard parts ensures the OMEN 35L is easy to enhance. The microATX board might limit expansion slots, but its design considers future upgrades.

Offering toolless access on both sides, standard components, and clear labeling, the OMEN 35L balances compact design with easy upgradeability. While the smaller motherboard limits some expansion potential, the layout remains intuitive.

As far as software is concerned, HP’s pre-loaded bloatware and fragmented applications can detract from an otherwise smooth setup. Although some extra features enhance the experience, occasional bugs affect overall usability.

In the few weeks I’ve been using it, the OMEN 35L has remained consistent and reliable, though certain software issues and BIOS access problems create nagging frustrations. Struggles to access the BIOS due to keyboard recognition issues limited my ability to exploit its full potential.

Despite these quirks, the OMEN 35L maintains its appeal. If you’re searching for a capable and attractive gaming desktop, this model holds its own in a competitive market, albeit not without its flaws.

Finally, if flexibility in a stylish, compact package excites you, the HP OMEN 35L is an alluring choice. However, if maximum gaming performance is your top priority, you might want to hold out for newer Intel chips or alternative configurations.

The HP OMEN 35L indeed sets a benchmark in pre-built gaming PCs—thanks to its intelligent design and versatility. While the gaming performance doesn’t leap ahead, users are treated to a brilliant blend of aesthetics, performance, and potential. If you’re interested, the specific model I’ve reviewed is available for $2,899.99 directly from HP. Alternatively, you can start customizing your ideal configuration from $2,019.99.
