Oh boy, where do I even start? PAX East 2025, right? Kind of feels like déjà vu, except this time it’s Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster on the Nintendo Switch 2. Honestly, I hadn’t played the original on the 3DS, which seems like a crime among RPG fans. So many folks swore it was like, right up there with Final Fantasy. So yeah, when I caught wind of a surprise demo from Square Enix at the event, I figured, hey, why not take a crack at it now? Fresh eyes and all that.
Anyway, first off — or maybe it’s just me — the lack of dual screens now… it’s jarring. Gone. Vanished. Poof! The devs kinda went nuts with the graphics, making everything super sharp in HD. Fancy new UI too, which was a nice touch. At one point, I asked one of the Square folks if they’d jazz up Bravely Second: End Layer with the same treatment, and her nod didn’t tell me much. Maybe it’s in the works? Or maybe she just agreed to shut me up. Who knows.
Playing the demo was intense — in a “hurried and slightly chaotic” kind of way. If I’m being real, I blew past the dialogue and cutscenes like they were old news so I could dive straight into the combat. It’s unlike anything I’ve tangled with before. You’ve got this Brave and Default thing going on. Basically, Brave lets you go all out with multiple attacks, but whoops, you’re left wide open afterwards. Default’s there to save your skin, letting you block and save up turns. It’s a nice balance. But because I’m reckless, I hammered away with Brave, challenging the enemy to a damage race, banking on luck not to get KO’d.
Oh, and the job system? Didn’t get a chance to dive into it. Yeah, should’ve known better, but time was ticking. I couldn’t help but think how ridiculous I was not checking this game out on the 3DS. Seriously, this remaster might save my RPG street cred. Mark your calendar for June 5th, when it hits the shelves alongside the Switch 2. It’s like they want you to have zero productivity that week. Funny how that works, right?
