Alright, so, here’s the thing about Drag x Drive. It’s this game coming out on Nintendo’s new Switch 2. Man, I didn’t even see it coming. Someone said something about wheelchair basketball? Controlled by mice? Yeah, weird, I know. Anyway, Nintendo dropped this gameplay trailer recently, all 7 minutes of it. Dives right into the guts of this sports gem just before its August 14 launch. Like, if you’re into that sort of thing.
So here’s what I caught – and maybe I got this wrong, but – it’s Drag “and” Drive, not “x”… who comes up with these names? The trailer sort of explains the controls and tricks and all that jazz. Plus, there’s some off-court stuff. I’m supposed to be excited about minigames. I think. Between matches? I’ll buy it. Keeps it fresh, maybe. Also, you can train. Or play bots. Classic.
Nintendo threw a feature list at us, and I’ll try to remember it without writing a novel. Jump into those online lobbies—seems like players can be anywhere. Mix of lobbies and parks? Cool, I guess. Up to 12 folks playing in public or private. Friend Parks are a thing, too. Tailored chaos with or without chat, on two courts. Tons of challenges to mess around with, try climbing that park leaderboard if you’re competitive like that.
For the offline folks, you’ve got the bot option to sharpen those skills. Three drivers—Guard, Center, Forward. Each with their quirks. Find your fit, they say. Then there’s this Circuit Sprint thing if you’re done with basketball. Might be a nice switch-up. It’s all about shooting contests and these wild minigames like Rebound Scramble. Jump rope suspiciously makes an appearance, but hey, whatever floats your boat.
Trophies? Sure, they’re in there. Earn ‘em and unlock helmets. Because customizing your driver’s headgear is obviously essential. Match armor and tires. Maybe blend the colors. Add a number. Be… unique. Or something.
The features sound intriguing, but who knows if it’ll catch on? I’m curious though. This trailer got me pondering. Sneak peeks happen with a Global Jam from August 9-10 (for the impatient among us). Download the demo, do some dribbling. I’ll give you the times, but I might forget:
– August 9, 3-7 am PT
– August 9, 5-9 pm PT
– August 10, 9 am-1 pm PT
So yeah, fingers crossed, Drag x Drive is a slam dunk. Or at least doesn’t flop.
