It’s official: From Software’s Elden Ring has crossed the remarkable milestone of 30 million copies sold worldwide since its debut in 2022. This achievement places it among some of the top-selling games in history, sharing the spotlight with classics like Borderlands 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Diablo 3.
The game first launched on February 25, 2022, and later expanded with a major DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, on June 21. Since then, 30 million players on both PC and consoles have ventured into The Lands Between. This number is especially notable given the game’s notorious difficulty. Players knew what they were diving into—and embraced the challenge wholeheartedly!
Commercially and critically, Elden Ring has enjoyed a great deal of acclaim. Both the base game and its DLC received glowing reviews. Transitioning from the Dark Souls series to an open-world format turned out to be a hit with both fans and critics. Although the game retained its signature difficulty, it did undergo some nerfs and balance tweaks to slightly soften the experience.
What lies ahead for From Software now that they’ve reached this 30 million mark is anyone’s guess. It’s evident, however, that they’re well aware of Elden Ring’s cherished status. A spin-off cooperative game, Elden Ring Nightreign, is on the horizon, utilizing much of the original’s world and assets with an intriguing new twist. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to expect the company to keep exploring this successful genre.
