Everybody’s pretty aware of the less-than-stellar reviews that Sony’s Spider-Man-less Spider-Verse movies have gathered, yet the director of Kraven the Hunter still believes you might find his new film worth your while.
We’re talking about films like Venom, Morbius, and the upcoming Madame Web. Each of these is tied to Spider-Man, they’re all under Sony’s belt, and let’s face it, they haven’t been the best so far. Venom has its charms if you ask me, but I digress. J.C. Chandor, who’s directing the forthcoming Kraven the Hunter, another installment focusing on a Spider-Man villain sans Spider-Man, is well aware of this reputation. In a chat with ComicBook, Chandor candidly acknowledged the criticisms and how previous films didn’t land well with audiences, but he hopes viewers might give his movie a try.
“I’m not keen to get bogged down in the details,” Chandor mentioned. “But as a filmmaker, my top priority, especially in the past few years where you all are really into this universe… many fans, understandably, didn’t like some choices made in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.”
He continues, “Other films ended up being incredibly successful. It’s been a mix of hits and misses. I’m asking folks to give us a shot, come watch the movie, and maybe overlook past missteps. Give our film a fair chance.” One could argue he’s bending the truth a bit. Among the five live-action Sony Spider-Verse films, it’s only really the Venom series that’s shone, thanks to its popular appeal compared to Morbius or Madame Web. It’s not exactly balanced success, is it?
Chandor also expressed his hope that fans will “see we’ve poured our all into making a really enjoyable story. When the credits roll, there’s potential for a lot of new paths to explore. My aim was to keep our movie a standalone tale, tell a compelling story, and then create room for exciting developments.”
Exactly what those developments could be is anyone’s guess, hinging entirely on the film’s reception. We’ll just have to wait and see how things unfold.
Kraven the Hunter drops into theaters in a couple of weeks on December 13. So, mark your calendars!
