Alright, so get this. There’s like a bazillion VR shooters out there, all trying to vibe with what Valve nailed ages ago with Counter-Strike. But guess what? Soon you can dive into the real deal on Quest and Pico headsets. Yep, thanks to these modding wizards at Team Beef.
Now, Team Beef isn’t new to this magic. They’ve sprinkled their VR fairy dust on a bunch of classics. Think Tomb Raider, Duke Nukem 3D — yeah, the oldies but goodies — plus Prey and Quake 4. Seriously, it’s like a retro gaming museum came to life in VR.
But now, these legends are cooking up something big. Yep, they’re crafting an unofficial Counter-Strike 1.6 port for Quest and Pico 4. Side note: 1.6 is, like, the definitive version from the Half-Life mod days. They dropped it as a full game on Steam back in 2000. Ancient history in gaming terms, I know.
So, here’s the techy bit I barely understand. They’re building this VR wonderland on the latest version of Xash3D FWGS. That’s a fan-made engine compatible with Valve’s original GoldSrc engine — you know, the whole Half-Life thing. Toss in a multiplatform client from Velaron and voilà, you got some digital magic brewing.
Cross-play? Check. Easy server creation from inside VR? Big check. And they’re gunning for full 6DoF motion controls, which sounds rad even if I’m still figuring out what it means.
When is this masterpiece hitting the streets? They say “very soon” (whatever that means) for Team Beef Patreon supporters. Meanwhile, there’s a teaser floating around, showing an early prototype. But, heads up, it’s missing those fancy 6DoF controls.
Anyway, keep an eye out. This might just be the nostalgic trip back to 2000 we didn’t know we needed. Or maybe I’m just overly excited. Can’t blame a gamer for dreaming, right?
